Got a toddler and a plane ticket? This guide on how to travel with toddlers on a plane will help make the trip less chaotic.

Mothers are superheroes, but not all wear capes.

I wasn’t fully informed about how motherhood looks like until I had my first bundle of joy, then I had the second, then my awesome set of twins. I nearly gave up

My mom, who is an active business woman will come over for a while and go back after few weeks and I am left with 4 little ones and a big baby to attend too.

As a onetime outgoing person, who lived for herself. I stopped going on trips and every other adventures, because of my kids.

But I had an urgent trip to embark on with my spouse. You already know that means, traveling with my toddlers.

Traveling with toddlers on a plane can be a tiring experience for any parent, but it doesn’t have to be a nightmare.

With a bit of preparation, patience, and intentionality, your next flight with your little one(s) can turn into a smooth and enjoyable journey.

If you’re a regular traveler or a first-time flyer, this guide will help you know the ups and downs of flying with toddlers.

Before the trip, I had read all sorts of stories about toddlers throwing tantrums, kicking seats, and being noisy and playful. I wasn’t sure if I was ready to take that chance, but the trip was unavoidable.

As we boarded and was all settled in, I could feel the eyes of the passengers on us, wondering how my little ones would behave.

But I had prepared, physically, mentally, and emotionally, for the trip.

I filled my bag with snacks, toys, and my phone with their favorite cartoon, so I was as ready as I could be.

And to my surprise, the flight was easier than I expected.

Of course, there were moments of restlessness, but with a our planning, we made it through.

That’s why I wanted to share with you this guide on how to travel with toddlers on a plane.

If I can do it, you can too.

1. What to Pack in Your Toddler Carry-On

A very important aspect and top priority when traveling with toddlers, is know what to pack.

As a stay at mom, I know what it’s like changing nappies and clothes at interval. I also know what its like not having access to my phone when I really want too.

To make things easy here’s our flying with a toddler checklist:

Flying with a Toddler checklist

  • new toys
  • tablet or device if your child uses one
  • a cup or bottle of water for toddlers
  • nappies (take more than you think you will need)
  • disposable or reusable wipes (more than you need)
  • portable changing mat
  • a few favourite toys
  • Lots of snacks and finger foods if your baby is weaned
  • a bottle for babies to help with pressure changes during takeoff and landing if they aren’t breastfeeding
  • blanket or comfort item (e.g. lovey/stuffed animal)
  • favourite cuddly toy
  • soother or dummy
  • warm socks
  • Extra clothes (for both toddler and parent
  • Entertainment (new small toys, stickers, tablet with headphones)
  • Medicines, teething gel, sanitizer

Do well to pack items in clear pouches or ziplocks so you’re not searching in mid-turbulence or when the restlessness starts.

2. Booking & Airport Preparation

Timing your flights can often make travels with baby easier, in theory anyway.

If possible, book flights around your child’s naptime. They’re more likely to sleep through the flight, making it easier for you and them.

Aim for flights that line up with your toddler’s nap, mid-morning or early afternoon usually works best.

Overtired kids and late-night flights don’t really mix well.

When picking seats, go for the front if you can and if it’s available. It’s quieter, closer to the bathrooms, and you’ll get off the plane faster.

Most airlines offer pre-boarding for families, use it! Getting on early gives you time to settle in without the rush.

At the airport, the family security line is your friend. And bring a light stroller or baby carrier to save your arms (and sanity).

A little planning goes a long way.

  1. Choose Family-Friendly Airlines

Some airlines are more accommodating to families with young children. Look for airlines that offer priority boarding for families, child-friendly amenities, and extra space for toddlers. It’s worth researching before your booking.

  1. Seat Selection Is Crucial

When booking your flight, consider choosing seats with extra legroom, like bulkhead seats. These give your toddler more space to move around and can make the flight more comfortable for both of you.

  1. Use a Car Seat

If your toddler is under the recommended age for using a seatbelt on their own, or if they’re more comfortable in a car seat, take your car seat along. Many airlines allow car seats for children under two years old. It adds comfort and safety during the flight.

  1. Pack Smart: Don’t Overpack

While it’s important to have everything your toddler might need, you don’t want to overload yourself with unnecessary items. Focus on packing the essentials—diapers, snacks, extra clothing, and entertainment.

  1. Snacks Are Key

Toddlers get hungry quickly, so having a variety of healthy snacks on hand is crucial. Include easy-to-eat items like crackers, fruit, cheese, and nuts. Don’t forget a few sweet treats to keep them happy during the flight!

  1. Keep Hydrated

Airplane cabins are notoriously dry, which can lead to dehydration. Make sure to bring a water bottle for both you and your toddler. Most airports allow you to bring an empty bottle through security, which you can fill up afterward.

  1. Pack Comfort Items

Bring your toddler’s favorite blanket, stuffed animal, or pacifier to help them feel secure and comfortable during the flight. Familiar items can ease anxiety and help with sleep.

  1. Bring a Toddler Activity Kit

Pack a small bag with toys, books, and interactive activities to keep your toddler entertained. Consider including:

  • Coloring books and crayons
  • Stickers
  • Small puzzles
  • A tablet or smartphone with preloaded child-friendly shows or apps

  1. Dress Comfortably

Make sure both you and your toddler are dressed in layers that can be adjusted during the flight. It can get cold on a plane, so it’s good to have sweaters or blankets on hand. Also, comfortable clothes will make it easier for your toddler to sleep or play.

  1. Pre-Boarding: Get Settled Early

Take advantage of pre-boarding for families. This allows you to settle in without feeling rushed and gives you extra time to get your toddler comfortable in their seat, stash your bags, and organize snacks and toys.

  1. Give Them a Window Seat (If Possible)

Toddlers often love looking out of the window, and having this view can distract them and make the flight more enjoyable. If possible, opt for a window seat for them to enjoy the view during takeoff, landing, or cruising.

  1. Use Diaper Changing Stations

Airplane bathrooms typically have changing tables, but they can be cramped. Plan diaper changes during times when the seatbelt sign is off and avoid trying to change diapers during turbulence or immediately after takeoff.

  1. Ear Pressure Relief

Toddlers are especially susceptible to ear pressure changes during takeoff and landing. To help ease the discomfort, offer a bottle, sippy cup, or pacifier. If your toddler is old enough, encourage them to chew gum or drink from a straw.

  1. Be Ready for In-Flight Meltdowns

Even with all the preparation, meltdowns can still happen. If your toddler gets fussy, remain calm, and try to distract them with a new activity, a snack, or a favorite toy. If things get tough, walking around the cabin for a bit can help both of you regain composure.

  1. Keep Them Active During the Flight

Toddlers have a lot of energy, and sitting still for a long time can be difficult for them. Encourage movement by walking up and down the aisle, stretching their legs, or allowing them to play with their toys on the seat or tray table.

  1. Bring a Stroller for the Airport

A lightweight, foldable stroller is a game-changer when navigating through airports. It allows you to move quickly while keeping your toddler secure and comfortable, especially when you have to transfer between gates or catch a connecting flight.

  1. Don’t Forget the Wipes

You’ll need wipes not only for diaper changes but also for cleaning your toddler’s hands, face, and tray table. Airplane surfaces can be a bit grimy, and wipes are a quick way to sanitize and keep your toddler feeling fresh.

  1. Have Backup Plans for Entertainment

Sometimes, the activities you packed might not engage your toddler for long. Have a backup plan for entertainment, like downloading additional episodes of their favorite show or using interactive apps that can hold their attention for longer.

  1. Stay Calm and Be Flexible

Above all, stay calm. Traveling with a toddler will always present its challenges, but if you remain patient and flexible, you’ll both get through it. If something goes wrong, whether it’s a tantrum or an unexpected delay, keep your cool and remember that this is just part of the adventure.

Traveling with toddlers on a plane doesn’t have to be a nightmare. With the right planning and strategies, you can turn what could be a stressful experience into an enjoyable one. Remember that every flight is an opportunity for you and your toddler to learn, grow, and adapt together. So, the next time you board a plane with your little one, you’ll be more than ready to handle whatever comes your way.

Safe travels!
